I've been looking for a good replacement for my ~10 year old WRT54Gv8 for a while. I've been running DD-WRT micro (all that's supported) ever since the stock firmware would drop all connectivity about once a week. WRT has allowed me to be almost problem free, but I believe the hardware is being overworked due to more wireless devices and streaming HD content over wired and wireless, along with introducing VoIP and online gaming.
Anyway, although I like the N66U, I don't think it's worth it for my needs. All I need is something that can reliably route traffic and manage bandwidth and nearly future-proof. IMO, 5GHz is not going to take over any time soon, so I'm not really bummed out about that. My main concern is being able to use VoIP (ooma), online gaming, and streaming HD (1080p hosted on my local wired LAN), all without hiccups and room to grow. I only have about 10 clients on the router combined, so it's not a massive network. I just want the processing and forwarding power to be available when needed and last potentially another 8-10 years.
I'm pretty set on getting the RT-N16 and running Shibby (just because) unless someone has a better idea… :) Thanks!
