Router: Asus RT-N16
Tomato Firmware 1.28.0000 MIPSR2-104 K26 USB AIO (Tomato-K26USB-1.28.RT-N5x-MIPSR2-104-AIO) by Shibby
I've been giving up on finding a decent build for a year now till I've tried Shilby's tomato. I might have started on the wrong foot with Asus RT-N16 since it had already problems with wifi even on stock fimware. My main reason to try other firmware was to get VPN connected on my router so I could share it on my local network which I've failed to do with zero success.
I've decided to give it another go few days back after looking around and founding how active this website is. At first I was surprised of how quick tomatoUSB is comparing to dd-wrt which was the field of my tests in the past. anyway I still couldn't get my VPN to work. I knew that it should connect normally since I had the chance to test a Sabai Technology router running tomato and it connected normally so I knew there is something that I have missed. Digging around and trying to check and test option that I could set for the conncetion. I managed to have my VPN to conncet on PTPPP but I needed to used the following in "Options":
I was ecstatic when I got it connected for the first time. I got excellent speeds when it was running good but I found out that it sometimes drops and disconnect with not being able to reconnect for long time. It didn't seem reliable in between successful connections and I would feel clueless to why now it is not connecting.
Since my Commercial VPN account runs on L2TP I wanted to move up and see how I could connect it using L2TP but till now I couldn't. The only thing missing that I couldn't configure was the Pre-Share Key. My VPN doesn't use any certificate or the such that I would need with OpenVPN. it is normally only configrable using server ip, username and password and the Pre-Shared key.
can someone explain to me more about or point at the right direction where to learn more about: Changing Authentication type (Chap, Mschap1/2, PAP) and what are the requirements for each
anyone can help in setting my VPN L2TP connection successfully.
