Ok, so I bought a WNR3500L off ebay cheap. Cranked it up everything looked good. I was interested in experimenting with tomato. The 3500 wouldn't allow me to upload the version of tomato I found based on the extension of the file. Then I found a post somewhere on the internet saying I should first install DD-WRT and then upgrade with tomato. That's what I did. DD-WRT installed without a hitch - everything looked promising. I uploaded the tomato firmware to the 3500 and now I seem to own a dead 3500. The power lights on but the link lights are out from my laptop to the 3500 using the patch cable supplied. I've already powered down the router and tried the hard reset and still nothing. So how do I revive my box and is there a good set of instructions somewhere that someone could point me to on how to install tomato? I'm pretty tech savvy but a complete noob to tomato and open source router firmware - but very enthusiastic!
I have low karma, cannot post url please insert / between below address
this page show that you can install tomatousb on WNR3500L but I'm not sure which file you used. the right sidebar has a link to recover your router. I wish you can telnet to your dd-wrt and reinstall new firmware from there. good luck
You need to provide what version of tomato you used. What color is the power light? I own a WNR3500L and there is three colors: green, orange, and yellow. Also what version WNR3500L are you running? It should state below the yellow WAN port. This will tell you how much space you have to install firmwares. Some 3500 have a 4MB flash chip, others have 8MB. You need to be sure which you have. Also, you need to make sure you use only K2.6 firmwares as 2.4 will brick the router.
1. Try plugging the laptop into different ports including the WAN port to see if you can ping the router (default is 192.168.1.1)
2. If you can ping then download this firmware and go to a command prompt and type
tftp -i 192.168.1.1 PUT tomato-K26USB-1.28.7500.4MIPSR2Toastman-RT-Lite.trx
3. Wait 10 minutes and do not touch anything. Go drink a beer, take a shower, whatever. When you come back the router should be loaded with tomato.
3. Then download this firmware and upgrade if you have the 8MB flash version.
