Following a recommendation from a Linux user on the 'Net I have place an order for an RT-N16. Along with this he told me to flash it with Tomato Toastman firmware. On looking on the Tomato site I am confused with all the builds. All I have learned is I need a K26 build. Looking through the builds I have not found the word Toastman so am I looking in the wrong place. Also do any of these builds support a print server?

Can you please guide me as to what build I should download and is there any risks with getting the wrong K26 build. I once bricked a NAS and would not like to do that again.

Is there simple step by step installation instructions I did find some on a blog but I am a bit reluctant to drift from the Tomato site.

What I am hoping to do is to open the box and start flashing. My knowledge in this area is basic.

I recently switched from a custom build to the Shibby build. I had delayed for a long time, because I didn't want to lose my customizations, but to my delight most of my patches are in the current Toastman and Shibby builds. The build I am using now is:

tomato-K26USB-1.28.RT-MIPSR2-097-Mega-VPN.trx

The one customization it is missing is ISO support. But the only thing I used ISO support is for network booting and installs. In the end it is just easier to use my NSLU2 for that…

That said, some people have experienced problems getting the Asus Firmware Restoration tool to work correctly, particularly on Windows 7. There is an alternate method described here that does not involve using the firmware restoration tool - http://tomatousb.org/forum/t-251656/installing-on-rt-n16#post-992768 (this is the method I used on my router and it worked fine, just make sure to follow the steps exactly)

As for what version to use - you will get plenty of opinions from people here :-) I have an RT-N16 running Toastman's tomato-K26USB-1.28.7498.1MIPSR2-Toastman-VLAN-RT-VPN.trx and I have been very happy with it. The key, as you pointed out, is that you need a K26 build with "RT" in the filename (as opposed to RT-N, which has a newer driver intended for newer routers).

Really? I didnt know that the RT-N builds worked on the RT-N16. Do you know if Toastman, Shibby, or any of the other devs have come out with an "official" position on using the RT-N builds on the RT-N16? I ask because on his 4shared site Toastman specifically lists the RT-N16 under the RT builds folder: http://www.4shared.com/dir/v1BuINP3/Toastman_Builds.html I'm sure it works as you say, but I'm hesitant to move to the RT-N builds without the blessing of Toastman, Shibby, etc…

That was before wifi driver doesn't work properly. VLAN and RT-N build never going OFFICIAL !
Btw you can NEVER brick an asus router you can always restore with asus tool to unbrick.
