I am a Internet admin for Co-op house with around 160 devices. We have been running Linksys WRT54GL's with DD-WRT and they have been great. Thing is, they are starting to get a little old so I am upgrading our AP's to Netgear WNR3500L. I have been playing with the stock firmware, dd-wrt, and TomatoUSB. From my testing I have found that I perfer TomatoUSB out of any of the other firmware. Right now I am using Toastman's Tomato USB.
Here is my issue: I have noticed that with TomatoUSB the wireless performance is a lot poorer than stock. Now I don't care about how many mb/s a the device can put out, but latency and response time. I have made sure that it is in the correct channel and etc. Through testing I have found that with Tomato or any other third-party firmware, websites take about an average of 1-5 seconds longer to load. It seems like the response time from first sending the request is taking around 500ms longer that it should. I have been searching forums for what might cause this issue and the best I have found is that the broadcom drivers do not work well with the hardware.
Has anyone else noticed this or is there some simply setting that might fix this? I can provide specific details of my setup if necessary.
