I was able to successfully setup a VPN tunnel using Tomatousb, and tunnelblick vpn client on my mac. I'm doing more work at public hotspots and I wanted to secure my network connection as well as have access to my home network. Everything seems to be working, but if (while connected to my VPN) I visit a site like (whatismyip, etc) it reports the IP address of the Wifi hotspot I'm using vs my home LAN public IP. My question is, are all my requests still going through the VPN tunnel? or do only LAN requests use it? My tunnel is setup using TUN, which may be related. In short, I just want to make sure I'm encrypted when using these public hotspots. Am I or did I configure something incorrectly?

In the VPN server Advanced area, make sure to have "Direct clients to redirect Internet traffic" is checked. You alternatively could place "redirect-gateway" in the client config. You must also make sure you are running with the appropriate privileges. I don't have a Mac, but I know in Windows you must run OpenVPN as an admistrator. This is to make sure that OpenVPN is allowed to modify your computer's routing table.
awesome, I'll try that. I don't think it's permissions, because I can successfully connect and access resources on my LAN. Just thought it was weird that I wasn't browsing as my LAN public IP. hopefully this does it. thanks!
