Hello. I'm considering purchasing the EA4500 N900 router. Is this supported or is there a plan on future support for this router?
Thank you in advance!
not supported and no plan
…unless you send a donated device to shibby or toastman
Asus RT-N16 Tomato Shibby build5x-101V
TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v1.8 - Openwrt 12.09beta
TP-Link TL-WR703n v1.2 - Openwrt Attitude Ajustement
Asus WL-500gP v1 - wl500g.googlecode.com rtn-r3702
And I think it would kind of defeat the purpose of owning it, wouldn't it? App Connect is the big reason to move to that Router, and I really doubt you'll get development or support on Tomato or DD-WRT for that. Eventually, Cisco imagines that washers, dryers, home automation systems, etc. will all be Cloud Connect enabled, and you'd be able to have apps on the router to help you monitor and control those devices. Other N900 compatible routers will come out that don't support Cloud Connect and they'll be much cheaper, and probably have supported chips in them already.
I believe the lore on this router is that the hardware is identical to the E4200 v2, so I wouldn't hold my breath for support on this device any time soon.
On the up side, you could always spend about the same to get a more powerful router by building your own and using an opensource firewall/router distro.
I have a the EA4500 and am buying another router since cisco cloud connect was forced upon me. Whats the shipping address to donate?
I just read about this great Cisco upgrade, pretty clever to auto-upgrade everybody's router remotely to install remote control trojan spyware - but there are some reversions possible apparently!
For hardware donation do be aware that Shibby is in Poland, Toastman in Thailand, so you might want to say where you are and find a local dev!
