I've managed to flash tomato-K26-1.28.0495MIPSR2-Toastman-RT-N-VPN to Asus RT-N12 H/W ver. B1 (BM5357) (using Asus rescue utility in a non-standard manner, but that's for another thread). It seems to work fine for my setup for 30 minutes so far. However, I've the following questions:
1. For WiFi, I can only choose B-Only or G-Only. Is there an N-Only option? (I'm sure that option is available on another build for RT-N16.)
2. Even with both IP Traffic monitor and Bandwidth monitor disabled, no QoS, this firmware seems to offer slightly lower (4 to 10 Mbps lower) WAN-to-LAN throughput than the Asus stock firmware. Is this expected?
3. With no LAN or WiFi activity that I create, i.e. mostly idle, CPU utilization is about 8%-9%. With P2P running and downstream over 50Mbps, CPU utilization reaches 80-99% (again with the two monitors disabled). Are these values normal?
I use the RT-N16 myself, although it still feels more responsive than the RT-N12 B1 (no QoS) that I'm setting up for someone else, the RT-N12 B1 is far cheaper and seems to be sufficient for home use. It makes me wonder whether the extra money I paid for the N16 is worthwhile or not.
Thanks to Toastman, Shibby, teddybear, etc.
