Early last week I tried to hook a 3TB Hitachi USB drive to the e3000 using the latest stock firmware. No go since they don't support NTFS. So, I took the dive and loaded Tomato USB VPN 2.6. Worked great until I tried to stream multiple movies from the attached USB hard drive. Whenever I did that, the device would stop responding to any requests to access the USB drive, would stop acting as a router and internet would fail as a result, etc. The only way to bring it back would be a reboot. If you just did basic internet and network sharing, no problems.
So, I decided that I may have been too ambitious in going to the latest compiled beta and should go to 2.4. I did a quick few searches, and all the instructions said that if you are already on Tomato, you shouldn't need to telnet to get the web password or any of those other steps that are required in some situations, so I just went to the web interface, tossed in 2.4 VPN, and told it to upgrade. It looked like it went through the steps fine. But, after waiting 15 minutes after the final step, I still couldn't get to the web interface. So, I unplugged it, waiting 10 seconds, plugged it back in, and started to do a ping -t. No dice, never came up under its original IP of 192.168.0.1. No web interface either so its not like it just disabled responding to ICMP on the LAN interface. So then, I decided that maybe it went back to its stock IP .. so I moved my PC to that ip range (192.168.1.1), and no dice. So, i held down the reset button for 10 seconds, waited awhile, tried both IPs again, no dice. Then I held the reset button down when it was switched off, then held it again and flicked the switch on, etc. I tried about everything I could with the reset button (short pauses, long pauses, etc).
The lights blink (LAN, Wireless, etc), but there's no wireless SSIDs around when its on. Devices connected to it's switch work fine though.
Did I brick it by trying to downgrade it? Is there anyway to rescue it … like a way to telnet in to some kind of bootloader it has and flash it from scratch? I love this router, I just wanted to resolve the lockup issue it had.
Thanks for any advice you have.
