It has been bothered me more than 1 year now, and I want to sell my router and say byebye to my tomato-USB.
In the last year, I used DSL 6MB for half year and then switch to U-Verse (12MB). Before I bought this router, I can use skype very well, and after I hooked up this router with tomato-USB, I was never been able to use skype for more than 5 minutes. Skype told me I had good internet connection at the beginning (I also have good video and audio for a few seconds), and then told me my connection was medium speed after 2 minutes with decreased video and choppy audio, later on skype told me my connection was very slow and suggested me turn off video. Even with my video off, the audio was still very choppy, finally skype just hung up.
The skype experience was never been improved even after I switched to U-verse which has 1.5Mb/s upload speed. But it works well I hook up my computer directly to modem.
The sad story does not end here. Almost all uploading applications have speed issues with this router hooked up.
I measured the upload speed using speedtest.net. Without router (rt-n16), the upload speed is about 1.4Mb/s (average of three repeats). With router hooked, the upload speed ranges from 0.1 to 0.5Mb/s (average 0.3Mb/s of three repeats). Also I can see the uploading speed deteriorate from 1.4Mb/s to 0.1Mb/s during the upload testing phase. It looks like that the router has something inside to limit the upload speed. Tomato-USB may also buffer the upload package so that the connection deteriorate upon load.
I never enable the QoS in tomato-USB.
Any help will be really appreciated and help me keep my router.
