This is mostly just a general networking question (operating system unspecific). I am connected wirelessly to a Linksys E3000 (running the TomatoUSB firmware) at 300Mbps as reported by my PC. This wireless router is not connected to anything else…not even internet. The router has a hard drive connected to its USB port with an SMB share. I'm attempting to transfer about 64 GB of music to a folder on the hard drive. What I don't understand is why my transfer speed is only approximately 1.30 MBps at best.
I know there's an obvious difference between Mbps and MBps. 300 Mbps divided by 8 is approximatly 37.5 MBps. I also understand that there's some overhead to be accounted for. But I would not expect the overhead to occupy 36 MBs of the available data rate that I should be getting. What gives?
