After some tinkering around I have my WL-500Gp working with:

a DS9490 USB<->RJ-11 adapter
a single DS19B20 temperature sensor

A couple things to note:

The DS2490 kernel module is not needed. In fact, it will block access to the chips.

as examples

owwnogui (from the oww package) works as well, though it requires setup and really expects some sophisticated hardware (like a 1-wire weather station - complete!)

I had to start it w/ the command

owwnogui -i

followed by a quick

devices driver USB

giving a rather messy looking …

After mucking around w/ different commands, I've got to the point that I've got my TomatoUSB router's setup to the point that I can start owwnogui and it will automatically use the USB driver.

In the previous post, I used

 owwnogui -i

followed by a

devices driver USB

… To make the devices driver USB permanent, once you are in the owwnogui interactive part, from within it execute a

search

Wait a while and execute a

save devices

In effect this will establish a working /opt/etc/oww/devices file for you, and subsequent issues of owwnogui -i will not have the annoying "1-wire Error: Open COM Failed
1-wire Error: Failed to acquire a necessary system resource" stanzas present.

Now my /opt/etc/oww/devices looks like this (rather than being blank):

To get a readout of all (-a) sensors, with a delay of 30 seconds between measurements ( -d 30), and have it repeat forever (-n 0 ; 5 for 5 repetitions, etc, but 0 makes it go on forever), execute

digitemp_DS2490 -a -d 30 -n 0

http://www.nslu2-linux.org/wiki/HowTo/AddUSBOneWireAdapter has some nice stuff and was a huge help.

If you are trying to do this on 64bit Ubuntu, you'll probably have to recompile digitemp (w/ libusb support) and use your own binary. A long sequence of Ubuntu users haven't been able to get anything useful out of the 64bit binary for digitemp. Here is a thread showing that: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1175627

If you try the above digitemp command and it give you nothing, try reinitiatlizing the config w/

digitemp -i

has anyone tried generating graphs on TomUSB, using either rrdtool (from Optware), or whatever builtin utility with which the bandwidth graphs made?

It would be nice to be able to collect the data _and_ serve it up in graphs realtime, using the router only.

After some reading and tinkering, it looks like rrdtool works as expected on our routers:

This shows the heating being turned on in the morning (though the office heat is on low)… and then the door being opened to the patio… there it is starting warm up outside…

This is crufty, and I'll try to clean it up, maybe into a How To or Tutorial…

Hardware Needed:

TomatoUSB (or other 'opened' firmware) router w/ a working/available USB port
DS9490 USB-to-1-Wire adapter
DS1820 or other similar 1-Wire Temperature Sensor

0. You do not need the Dallas 1-Wire kernel modules for this, as routers typically do not have parallel or serial ports (stock), and you will likely be using a USB-to-1-Wire adapter. The digitemp that you'll be using is compiled against libusb, with includes the support needed.

It is assumed that you have USB file sharing turned on, so that you can examine your graphs without (initially) having to set up a webserver to see them.

1. Get Optware set up and install rrdtool & digitemp

ipkg install rrdtool digitemp

To shorten typing of commands, link digitemp to digitemp_DS2490

cd /opt/bin
ln -s digitemp_DS2490 digitemp

2. Attach your 9490 USB-to-1-Wire adapter. Check dmesg to see that the USB adapter is recognized.

dmesg | grep 2490
usb.c: USB device 3 (vend/prod 0x4fa/0x2490) is not claimed by any active driver.

3. Attach the DS1820 (or other) sensor to your 9490 adapter, using the RJ-11 port. Run a digitemp microLAN walk to see if your sensor is recognized.

5. Create a rrdb (round-robin-database) file, suitable for

collecting 1 temperature measurment,
starting now (0)
every 60 seconds
called probe1-temp
type GAUGE
expected to be measured no less than every 120 seconds
with valid ranges from -20 to 120 (degrees)
and make a round-robin archive of that data,
measuring the LAST value
expecting no less that 10% of tha data
depending on that 1 piece of data,
and collect 1440 pieces of data (24 hours' worth)

rrdtool create /opt/rrdb/temptrax.rrd \
--start 0 --step 60 \
DS:probe1-temp:GAUGE:120:-30:120 \
RRA:LAST:0.1:1:1440

I created mine in /opt/rrdb, but a better place would be in /opt/share or /opt/usr/local/share, etc.

6. Initialize digitemp with the output format needed and store the config file in /opt/etc/digitemp.conf

cd /opt/etc
digitemp -q -a -o3 -i   # -q quiets the copyright info
                               # -a means all sensors (you have only one) 
                               # -o3 gives simple output of a sequence number and the temp in Fahrenheit
                               # -i  writes the config to a file called .digitemprc

cp .digitemprc digitemp.conf     # copy that config to a more traditional config file name

7. Create scripts to add in new data to the database, and to generate a graph.

First, a script to read the temperature and submit the reading to your rrdb.

Secondly, a script to draw of graph of the rrdb information.

8. Use cron to keep everything updated periodically/automatically. To do this, you'll need to make sure these lines are added to your root crontab. An easy way of doing this is to add the following to your Administration->Scripts->Firewall:

sleep 3    # allow some time for unit to settle after walking 1-Wire LAN, then initialize all sensors on 1-Wire LAN

echo "*/1 * * * * /opt/bin/temp_update #temp_update#" >> /var/spool/cron/crontabs/root

##                              update the graph every 15 minutes

Save and wait at least 15 minutes.

9. Using filesharing or whatever means works for you, find /opt/rrdb/temperature.png and open it. You should see a graph that shows a temperature reading on the far right side. With the setup and code I've shown here, it will take a full 24 hours until the data on the graph reaches the left side.

10. Use thttpd (or another server) to make your images available for you and/or others.

I also posted an ipkg of rrdtool that doesn't paste the TOBI OETIKER tag/logo on every graph… Nothing against Tobi- his work is first-rate - it is just a bit more aesthetically correct to be able to have a graph _without_ the stamp.
