After some tinkering around I have my WL-500Gp working with:
- a DS9490 USB<->RJ-11 adapter
- a single DS19B20 temperature sensor
A couple things to note:
- The DS2490 kernel module is not needed. In fact, it will block access to the chips.

as examples
- owwnogui (from the oww package) works as well, though it requires setup and really expects some sophisticated hardware (like a 1-wire weather station - complete!)
I had to start it w/ the command
owwnogui -i
followed by a quick
devices driver USB
giving a rather messy looking …

A lot of hardware is still missing, but now my son and I have this summer's science project up and running. I'll try to add more as we put the rest of the stuff in place:
- Lighting Strike Counter
- 1-Wire Weather Station (Anemometer, Light Meter, Thermometer, Barometer)
- Humidity meter
- Rain Gauge
