I've tried versions 50, 52, and 54 of the 2.6 TomatoUSB VPN builds on my RT-N16 and can't get a strong or stable wireless connection with any of them. Each upgrade or downgrade is followed properly with nvram clears of over 5 minutes.
My quality will be in the mid to upper 30's with an RSSI in the between -60 and -70dBm. This is on both channel 6 and 11. You can sit on the PC and watch the connection rate bounce around every second from 28 to 54mbps and a signal of 2 to 5 bars in windows. The connection will randomly either drop out or turn to limited or no connectvity after short time. It has a LinkSys WMP54g v4.1 wireless pci card with the latest ralink drivers. The router is approximately 25 feet away from the desktop with a clear line of sight.
With the stock 220.127.116.11 ASUS firmware I get a solid 54mbps and 5 bars and can stay connected for days.
The only settings I changed in Tomato were setting broadcast to g only, and up WPA2 with TKIP/AES and a custom SSID and passkey. Changing the TX power from the default 17db to 16 or 18 never did anything. Changing Interference mitigation from the default manual to off never did anything either. I even unplugged every wireless device in my house with no effect recorded. I'm the only wireless signal around, as i'm 5 miles into nowhere, confirmed with netstumbler.
My wired ethernet connection never has a hicup on Tomato. Any idea why Tomato is actually much worse than the stock firmware on wireless irregardless of the version and how to try and fix it?
