I'm having problems getting a reliable connection and downloads on my Wii when using Tomato. Things work fine on my Verizon router. While playing back Netflix movies, they freeze and say "retrieving" for minutes at a time. Sometimes it will play 30 seconds of video, then lock up for 3 or 4 minutes. This is using Netflix installed on the device, not on a disk, and the Wii is fully up-to-date.
A little background: I have Verizon FIOS service which requires that I use their MI424-WR router with a coax connection running stock firmware. Behind it I have an ASUS RT-N16 running the latest TomatoUSB with Auto WiFi mode enabled to support B/G/N clients using WPA2 Personal with TPIK/AES.
Test Wii with ASUS/Tomato
To see what's going on, I installed the Internet/Opera browser option on the Wii and went to speedtest.net. The Wii was connected to the ASUS/Tomato router. I did the following tests.
First test on Wii: 95ms, 3.35Mbps down, 0.37 up. Test finished in about 1 - 2 minutes.
Second test: 95ms, download going consistent with speed around 2Mbps, then stopped half way through and speed reported kept going down and down. Aborted at just over half download completed and down speed reported at 1.40Mbps. Waited around 5 minutes before reloading page.
Third test: Reloaded page and started test. Took a long time to get going. Again it stopped just under half way through and reported ping of 141ms, 0.84Mbps down. Waited about 5 minutes again.
Forth test: Reloaded page again. Took a while to get a ping back, but came back at 145ms. Download never started, even after letting it sit for about 3 minutes.
Here's what Tomato was reporting at one point during the third test (it might have been downloading at this time):
192.168.3.131 Wii -56 dBm 29 54 / 6
Here's what Tomato was reporting at one point during the fourth test (while it seemed frozen):
192.168.3.131 Wii -56 dBm 30 - / 6
Test Wii with Verizon/WEP
So now I switched the Wii to connect to the Verizon/WEP router and ran four more tests. Every single test worked with speeds around 95ms, 3.75 down, 0.49 up.
Test Wii with ASUS/Tomato
So I switched back to the ASUS/Tomato connection and ran another test. This time it couldn't even load the speedtest.net web page. Reloading didn't work. I let it sit a few minutes, then reloaded the page and it came up slowly. Running the speed test reported 145ms, but again, the download never started.
When I connected my MacBook Pro directly to the verizon router with an ethernet cable, or directly to the ASUS router with an ethernet cable, or via WiFi to the Verizon router using WEP, or to the ASUS router using WPA2, I get speeds like 45ms, 19Mbps down, and 4Mbps up. These speeds are MUCH better than the Wii gets. The wireless tests on the MBP are done from the same room that the Wii is in.
Any suggestions on how I should best troubleshoot the problem? It seems the problem is happening only when using ASUS/Tomato. I'm brand new to TomatoUSB, so are there some features in it that would help me figure out what is going on? Do I need to setup some port forwarding or anything like that?
