So I picked up an RT-N16 and switched it over to Tomato as I was not happy with the builds of DD-WRT I tried. The signal strength seems to be better and stability wise much better, however I'm only getting a transfer rate of between 52 and 78 mbps with the router set as N-only. WPA2/AES key and all other options being stocked if that matters.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and any tips from fellow RT-N16 owners on how to make the most of this router would be great.

I am having the same results with my RT-N16. Although I am running WPA/AES (otherwise WDS seems to lose connection). I have read that running N requires WPA2/AES - I tried that and saw no difference…

Clear the nvram (using the Tomoto GUI). Then, reload (upgrade) the same firmware. I had the same issue before I did this. Clearing the nvram gets rid of all lingering traces of the Asus firmware or dd-wrt (if you did the 2-step method of installing Tomato).

well you also have to see what kind of adpater you have. no all are created equal. i have a phone with an N card in it but max connection is 65. some are 150 max.

As said above about the adapter. A 1x1 MIMO N adapter like say the late model Iphone isnt even capable of 150 Mbps. A 2x2 MIMO N Adapter like the Intel 6200 I believe in 20 Mhz wide channels does like 144/150 (I connect upwards of 109) and with 40 Mhz wide channels can connect up to 300 Mbps which is what the router is rated for.

Chances are your adapter and or setup is limiting your speed, not necesarilly the router hardware as I have this model. I forget what the exact speed 1x1 cards are limited to i think its 78 though.

yes, i have a broadcom 4313 with BT 3.0 stack and only 1x1 .11n maxing out at 78Mbps but i discovered the actual speed is~ 5.7MB/s - quite ok for my needs.
