I usually don't reset nvram either. It has always worked. As far as nvram commands are the same I suppose there should bo no problem. If you clear it then rewrite the same thing from GUI I think it's equivalent to not erase the nvram.
Clearing it is important when you change from dd-wrt to Tomato for example, or if there are major changes in the update, but I hope there would be warnings in the changelog.

Yes, but I think it's worth keeping the nvram and erasing it only it there are problems…
With this particular update, people erasing their nvram seemed to have problems…
