I'm looking to install to a Netgear WNR3500L — how should I do it? Can the .trx files simply be renamed .chk, or should I still be installing DD-WRT first, or what?

This page implies I should be able to get a .chk version of Tomato USB:

Which is, I assume, kind of crap?

Hoping to not brick too soon, haven't ordered any de-bricking supplies yet.
On a related note, how secure is this beta? It sounds like you folks have it exposed to the internet without problems?

Installed dd-wrt mini (chk) from dd-wrt website, then tomato usb build 49.
Set dd-wrt to clear nvram after upgrade; had tomato do the nvram clean after install.

No problems so far; haven't had time to do serious security testing.

I have another noob question :

If I do not want to use USB, do I have an interest to install the VPN noUSB (build 49 - fix for OpenVPN) instead of VPN (build 49 - fix for OpenVPN) ???? (I need OpenVPN !)

The article on myopenrouter is OLD. It was published long before Tomato USB has been even released for WNR3500L, and was about some other adaptation of Tomato for this router (which didn't work well by the way - it had no "N" support and no WPA2 encryption). So this article is not really a crap - it's just obsolete.

Yes - you need to install dd-wrt first, then Tomato. If you don't want to use USB, you can install either version - with or without USB support. You don't have to turn the USB features on even if they are there. On the other hand - they don't take any resources (other than flash space) unless activated - so why not to have them just in case you change your mind later and decide to use USB - for printer/storage sharing or Optware?

Have got my Netgear this day, will flash tomorrow, starting with dd-wrt mini, 30/30/30 process and so on.

Having a bit of a problem upgrading from DD-WRT.chk to a Tomato.bin or even a DD-WRT.bin. I select the appropriate .bin file, then hit "upgrade," then watch the thing error out almost instantly. Any idea what I am doing wrong? Using a Netgear WNR3500L.

Oops, fixed my mistake. Just needed to clear the browser cache. Ignore me.

I am having an issue with my installation on the WNR3500L.
I cannot login into browser control panel because it keeps asking for user/pass. I tried every user/pass combo I could think of.
I cannot telnet, connection as is refused.
Best part = Reset button doesn't work! I can hold it forever and nothing happens.
But router is running. Can even connect to wifi "dd-wrt" ssid.

Here is what did:
->Installed dd-wrt.v24-14896_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk
->Then Flashed with tomato-K26USB-1.28.9050MIPSR2-beta20-vpn3.6.trx

Both flashes seemed to go fine.

How can I get back in? Anybody got an idea?

For the browser, username is admin.

For ssh/telnet, username is root.

Password is whatever you set in Administration>Admin Access>Password.

If you did not set a password, try admin.

It telnet refuses connections, you probably did not enable it.
